Artist Talk: Luis Sahagún 1:50–3pm
Date: Thursday, November 7th, 1:50–3pm
Location: Yeh Art Gallery, Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall, St. John’s University
Join us for an artist talk by Luis Sahagún, an exhibiting artist in To Mend the Heat. Sahagún will discuss his sculptures, drawings, and paintings, which are deeply informed by his practice of Curanderismo, a medicinal and spiritual healing tradition rooted in Mexico’s indigenous cultures.
Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Luis Sahagún is an artist whose work encompasses painting, performance, and sculpture to explore and challenge racial and cultural narratives. His practice, deeply influenced by his heritage as the grandson of a Curandera and his experiences as a formerly undocumented immigrant, navigates the intersections of mestizaje, colonialism, and cultural reclamation. Sahagún's work has been featured in prominent exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, Latchkey Gallery, Charlie James Gallery, and the National Museum of Mexican Art, among others.
