The Yeh Art Gallery is thrilled to present Timeframes, a a special project installed in our corridor vitrines by new media artist Siebren Versteeg

In Timeframes, Siebren Versteeg presents five live-feed video artworks that transform familiar places through techniques of re-cropping, mirroring, pixelation, and other forms of digital manipulation. Installed on flat-screen monitors within the gallery’s hallway vitrines, each video is surrounded by a painted frame bearing the work’s title. Fabricated in collaboration with artist April Childers, the frames connect the individual works into a continuous visual poem along the corridor while extending authorship beyond that of the individual artist.

For more than twenty years, Versteeg has experimented with live feeds and algorithmically generated imagery, exploring how networked technologies shape the ways images are produced, circulated, and experienced. Drawing on real-time views of the Sphere in Las Vegas, the Empire State Building in New York City, the Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., and the Acqualina Beach Resort in Miami, alongside a 1:1 scaled live feed of a table of remote controls in the artist’s studio, Timeframes moves between sites of spectacle and tourism and the private space of the artist’s studio. By appropriating and altering these continuously streaming images, Versteeg considers the desire for instantaneous telepresence—the promise that contemporary technologies allow us to be somewhere other than where we physically are at any given moment. At the same time, the works draw attention to the surveillance infrastructure underlying this experience: cameras trained continuously on public spaces become sources of entertainment, and escape.
